Situation Report

The Regional Situation Report for the Syria Crisis offers a bird’s eye view of UNFPA’s operations within the context of the Syria Crisis. The report is prepared by the UNFPA Regional Syria Response Hub in Amman, Jordan, and spans operations conducted by UNFPA offices in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt, in addition to operations conducted inside Syria and managed from cross-border Turkey.

In addition to providing aggregated quantitative results for each country, the report also brings stories from the field that highlight the plight of communities inside Syria and in host countries, in addition to underscoring the positive impact of the response services provided by UNFPA in the areas of sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, youth, and others.

Syria Country Office - COVID-19 Humanitarian Response Flash Update #1 /March 6th – April 8th 2020

Situation Report

As of 08 April 2020, Syria reported a total of 19 COVID -19 cases, with 2 recoveries and 2 registered deaths. Since  the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Syria on March 23rd, the Government of Syria has introduced precautionary measures against the novel coronavirus. These measures include: movement restrictions between  governorates, city centers and rural areas, as well as a countrywide curfew in effort to ensure social distancing  and self-isolation to minimize the risks of infections. Part of these efforts also include a ban on public gatherings and activities that involve large numbers of people.

Publication

Provision of modern short- and long-acting contraceptives, information, counselling and services (including emergency contraception) is lifesaving and should be available and accessible during  the COVID-19 pandemic response.

In the context of COVID 19, with the disruption of schools, routine health services and community-level centers, new ways of providing information and support to  adolescents and young people for sexual and reproductive health and rights need to be established.

 The pandemic will compound existing gender inequalities, and increase risks of gender-based violence. The protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls should be prioritized.

In 2020, lamentably, the world will face an unprecedented moment: 1 out of every 45 people will be affected by humanitarian crises. The stakes of inaction have never been so dire. Accelerated action by the international community is particularly important in countries affected by humanitarian crises and fragility, where women and girls face heightened risks of gender-based violence, and more than half of all maternal deaths take place.

Costing the Three Transformative Results

Publication

This publication focuses on new research to estimate the costs associated with a programmatic approach and the global cost of achieving these three transformative results by 2030. The costing analysis pertains to the global effort led by UNFPA towards: (a) ending preventable maternal deaths, (b) ending the unmet need for family planning, (c) ending gender-based violence and all harmful practices, including child marriage and female genital mutilation.
