The United Nations Population Fund in Syria is alarmed by the number of civilians including women and children affected  by the current escalation in Al Hassake, North East of Syria.

Since 20 January, civilian casualties were reported in Al Hassake and thousands of people have been displaced from their homes. Most of the displaced have sought safety with family and friends in nearby areas.

The  escalation is taking place in extremely cold winter conditions across Syria, resulting in that the affected people urgently need basic health, protection services and  supplies, as well as  food, household, and hygiene items. UNFPA & humanitarian organizations are scaling up efforts to respond to the needs of those who have fled their homes. UNFPA remains committed to providing life-saving services to women and girls who are facing significant challenges amidst harsh living conditions.

UNFPA is working with its local partners on the ground to provide shelter residents with reproductive health care, gender-based violence prevention and response services and psychosocial support through integrated mobile teams and 2 static reproductive health clinics in Al Hassakeh city. UNFPA and its partners are distributing winterized dignity kits and sanitary napkins for women and girls in temporary shelters.

UNFPA remains committed to continue its work and reach all those in need, IDPs and affected communities in Al Hassake and surrounding areas. UNFPA calls on all parties to ensure that displaced women have access to critical health and protection services.

UNFPA continues to urge all parties to allow safe, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access to all people in need in Syria in line with their obligations under International Humanitarian Law.

UNFPA will continue to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
