UNFPA joins SARC and UN-interagency convoy to deliver humanitarian assistance to women and girls stranded at Rukban camp

Damascus, 03 Nov 2018

The United Nations and Syrian Arabic Red Crescent (SARC) today reached the Rukban camp in south-east Syria to deliver humanitarian assistance to 50,000 people living in a camp near the Jordanian border. The inter-agency aid operation, which started today, is expected to take three to four days.

UNFPA Syria joined the UN convoy and contributed with hygiene supplies for women and girls stranded at the camp. UNFPA team on the ground is also exploring the opportunity for a rapid assessment of reproductive health and protection needs with specific focus on gender-based violence.

As Ali Al-Za'tari, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Syrian Arab Republic stated, the overall humanitarian situation in Rukban camp remains at a critical stage, with reported shortages of basic commodities, protection concerns, and increasing violence.

UNFPA’s mission with this convoy is to respond to the critical sanitation needs of women and girls in the camp, as part of a joint effort with the UN, SARC, and camp coordinators” said Karen Daduryan, UNFPA Represntative in Syria.  “Women and girls are among the worst affected by the harsh living conditions in the camp, and UNFPA will do its best to help them preserve their dignity and health” continued Mr. Daduryan.
