Damascus, Syria – Amid years of conflict and complex humanitarian challenges, a new wave of hope is rising in Syria—led by young scholars committed to building a better future for their communities through research and innovation. With support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, a group of master’s and Ph.D. students is conducting groundbreaking research on some of Syria’s most pressing social and public health issues.
Launched in 2022, the initiative empowers young researchers to explore topics directly tied to daily life in Syria—from reproductive health and gender-based violence to youth participation and social protection. Their studies go beyond academia; they reflect lived realities and propose practical solutions.
Among the research topics: how pregnant women navigated health risks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the influence of social media on perceptions of gender-based violence, and the unique challenges faced by women in the health workforce. Other studies shed light on young people’s awareness of reproductive health amid crisis conditions.
Out of 30 proposals submitted, 13 were selected by a joint committee of representatives from UNFPA, the Ministry of Higher Education, and Syrian universities. These research projects are already informing programme design, policy dialogue, and community-level interventions, helping to improve access to quality health services, support gender equality, and strengthen youth empowerment initiatives.
“This collaboration is about more than research,” said Muriel Mafico, UNFPA Representative in Syria. “It’s about building local knowledge, strengthening national systems, and ensuring that young people have a voice in shaping the policies that affect them.”
Through this partnership, Syria is investing in a new generation of scholars—critical thinkers who bring fresh perspectives and solutions grounded in local realities. Their findings are contributing to the broader effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, especially those related to health, gender equality, and inclusive governance.
This initiative stands as a testament to the resilience of Syrian youth, and to the power of education, evidence, and partnership in driving sustainable progress.
