“It is difficult to simultaneously be both the mother and the father,” said Hanan , mother of a son and two daughters living in Rural Damascus. “Before I came to the Women and Girls Safe Space, I didn’t know about the different forms of violence against women. I didn’t know it could happen within a family too. My husband and I were happy, though we got married when I was very young. After his death, I was unhappy, and my family was very controlling. Now, I feel strong enough to stand up for myself and talk about my experiences. I learn new skills. I even take English classes as that will help me find work. It’s my dream to have my own place where I can live with my children.” The creation of Women and Girls Safe Spaces has emerged as a key strategy for the protection and empowerment of women and girls affected by the Syrian crisis.
