قالت الدكتورة ناتاليا كانيم، المديرة التنفيذية لصندوق الأمم المتحدة للسكان: "ينبغي أن تبدأ حياة أي طفلة بالطريقة نفسها التي تبدأ بها حياة كل إنسان: كتاب مفتوح تُسَطِر فيه قصتها. ولكن منذ اللحظة التي تولد فيها الطفلة، يُحكَم عليها بالحرمان فعلًا لمجرد كونها وُلِدَت أنثى".
