Al-Hol Camp Situation Report- 18 March 2019

Publications

Al-Hol camp continues to receive an influx of displaced people. While the last few days had seen a marked slowdown of arrivals, the situation remains unpredictable. As observed in recent influxes to Al-Hol, most new arrivals are women and children, who still constitute the majority of the camp’s occupants. The protection concerns have increased due to the high influx number of new arrivals. Overcrowding and disruptions in safety nets put women and children in conditions of evident fatigue and distress. With women and children separated from their families and possible safety nets, there is a potential risk of gender-based violence, particularly possible sexual violence, exploitation and abuse. Considering the vast number of women and girls in the camp and the poor general health conditions, reproductive health problems are substantive. UNFPA is making great efforts to meet the reproductive health needs as well as humanitarian response to GBV and the provision of reproductive health  and GBV services remain  life-saving to women and girls in Al-Hol camp. The needs continue to be dire, and while UNFPA and partners are working on mitigative solutions, there are still huge gaps in reproductive health and GBV services and there is a need to support the expansion of GBV and RH services and respond to the critical and increasing needs of the growing population.

When caged birds sing: stories of Syrian adolescent girls

Publication

As the war in Syria approaches its ninth year, the humanitarian situation is continually evolving, and the needs of the affected populations remain high. Even as some parts of Syria appear to be stabilizing, the crisis has long since passed a tipping point in terms of generational change, and its effects will undoubtedly continue for many years to come. This is particularly true in the case of women and girls due to the deep-rooted complexity of the issues they continue to face on a daily basis.

This publication is an attempt to highlight the plight of adolescent girls who have survived one of the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. The information, stories and quotations provided not only shed light on the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis, but also highlight their hopes, aspirations and their courageous efforts to find their place amid the chaos of conflict.
